Western Michigan Christian girls opened their season Tuesday night at Grandville Calvin Christian with a 54 to 48 win.
“We had the Squires on their heels in the first quarter with a full-court press, finishing the quarter up 18-10,” WMC coach Jeremy Goorman said. “Unfortunately, the second quarter the Warriors went cold and Calvin found their rhythm."
Warrior Taylor Folkema scored 10 points in the first quarter and Meghan Heiss had six in that quarter. Grace Vannamen for Calvin scored 15 points in the first half, keeping Calvin alive and finished with 24.
"Calvin changed defenses and forced seven turnovers and held us to one field goal in the second quarter.
“Anna Sytsema is nursing a sore shoulder and is very limited in her range of motion. She was tentative in the first half, but came up with four field goals in the second half. Jenna Houskamp had three, three pointers in the second half which helped open the floor for the interior players. Anna finished with 10 points and Jenna had 11 points. Meghan Heiss had a strong over all game with eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
"It was our first victory in at least three years against Calvin. Starting the season with a win over a quality team will be a launching pad for our confidence.”
