MUSKEGON CATHOLIC CENTRAL: 1
Warriors Move into First-Place Tie
with 2-1 Win Over Muskegon Catholic
Visiting Western Michigan Christian used a fast start and strong finish to net a narrow 2-1 win over rival Muskegon Catholic Central on Wednesday in Lakes Eight Conference action.
The win moves WMC to 6-1 in the Lakes Eight Conference, tied with the Crusaders, who were previously undefeated in league play.
Ten minutes into the contest, Maddie Woods connected with Emily Rosema, who ripped a shot past the MCC keeper from 18-yards out to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Just 10 minutes later, Abby Oppenhuizen took a cross pass from Woods and buried the shot in the net to give the Warriors a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Crusaders would get on the scoreboard with three minutes left in the game to draw within one, but the Warrior defense would fend them off the rest of the game.
"We played very well tonight against a great team," said WMC head coach David Hulings. "MCC was missing a couple of their top players and it certainly made a difference in their attack. But, we had two very good goals tonight that would have been great goals against most teams. I thought this was one of our better passing games of the season and we got better with our off-the-ball movement.
WMC moves to 8-9 overall and 6-1 in league play. With the win, the Warriors are currently tied with MCC in the Lakes Eight Conference. The Warriors travel to Orchard View on Tuesday for their final league contest of the season.
