Warriors Lose Two in GMAA Tourney
WMCC softball participated in the GMAA tournament on Saturday at Holton High School and dropped games to Montague and Holton by the scores of 18-0 and 15-0, respectively.
In the first game, Montague jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, taking advantage of 4 WMCC errors and went on to gain a 18-0 victory in 4 innings.
WMCC offense included a lead off walk to Rebecca Ter Haar (WMC) and a 4th inning bunt single by Maria Sanocki (MCC). Sanocki and Sophie Hawke (WMC) shared pitching duties and recorded one strikeout.
In the second game, Holton, after being limited to one run in the first inning, erupted for 5 runs in the next two innings and then completed the game with 4 more runs in the 4thinning.
Collecting hits for WMCC were Sanocki and Kelcea Waller (WMC). Hawke and Abby Sweetman (WMC) pitched for WMCC and struck out one.
WMCC is now 5-8 overall and 1-2 in Lakes 8 conference play.
From WMCC Coach Jeff Nestell: “We ran into two very good teams today. The error bug bit us in the first game, which was a bit surprising because our defense has been very good all season. We played much better in the second game, but ran up against a state-ranked team that excelled in every area of the game. We’re looking ahead to another busy week with 4 conference games and a non-conference game with North Muskegon. We will learn from today and keep working to improve our game.”
