WMC Takes Two from Big Reds
WMCC softball hosted Muskegon for a non-conference doubleheader and came away with two wins by the scores of 18-1 and 23-4.
In the opener, Muskegon scored a run in the top of the first, but it was all WMCC after that, scoring 9 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to claim the 18-1 win in 3 innings.
The WMCC offense included 9 hits and 10 walks. Leading the way at the plate was Hannah Pell (WMC) with 3 hits and 3 RBI and Maria Sanocki (MCC) with 2 hits and an RBI. Catherine Bradford-Royle (WMC) drove in two with one hit.
Sanocki picked up the win, throwing 3 innings of 1-hit ball, striking out 4.
In the second game, WMCC jumped out to a 5-0 lead that Muskegon quickly responded to with a run in the bottom of the first. A 7-run second inning for WMCC opened up a 12-1 lead. Muskegon battled back with 3 runs in the bottom of the second inning, but an 11-run third inning for WMCC put the game away.
Every WMCC batter had at least one hit with Sanocki (3 hits, 4RBI) and Rebecca Ter Haar (WMC, 3 hits, 2 RBI) leading the way. Pell and Abby Sweetman (WMC) each had two hits. Sweetman earned her first high school varsity victory, pitching three innings without giving up a hit and striking out 3.
WMCC is now 7-13 overall and 1-6 in Lakes 8 conference play.
From WMCC Coach Jeff Nestell: “It was a beautiful day for softball and a good day for WMCC Softball. There were lots of highlights on the day, including two inning-ending double plays and first-year players Soli Gordon (MCC) and Katelyn Fooks (MCC) getting their first hits of the season.
"It was also good to see Abby Sweetman get her first win as a pitcher without giving up any hits. We’ll have some adjustments to make as we face Orchard View on Friday. For today, though, we’ll take the wins and build from here.”
