WMC Battles Against Strong OV Team

WMCC softball traveled to Orchard View for a Lakes 8 Conference doubleheader and the host Cardinals took both games by the scores of 15-0 and 8-5.

In the opener, solid hitting by Orchard View and dominating pitching by Allie Tenhove led OV to a 10-0 lead after two innings and a 15-0 victory in the fourth inning.

WMCC was limited to two hits in the game, one each from Hannah Pell (WMC) and Maria Sanocki (MCC).  Sophie Hawke pitched for WMCC and struck out one.

Orchard View’s 12-hit attack was led by Halee Holman with 2 hits and 3 RBI.  Morgan Taylor, Cassidee White, and Matisen Gaunt each picked up 2 hits.  Tenhove pitched 4 innings of 2-hit ball, striking out 9.

In the second game, the score was knotted at 1-1 when OV pushed 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the third to open up a 4-1 lead.  After a scoreless 4th inning for both teams, WMCC took the lead in the 5th inning with 4 runs, highlighted by an RBI single by Pell.  OV came back in the bottom of the frame with 3 runs to re-take the lead at 7-5.  With another run in the 6th, OV then held off a WMCC threat in the 7th with a game-ending double play to secure the win.

Getting hits for WMCC were Sanocki, Abby Sweetman (WMC), Pell, Kelcea Waller (WMC), and Taylor Mosher (WMC).  Stephanie Weesies (WMC) drove in 2 runs.  Hawke returned to the circle for the second game and pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs.

White and K Tenbank each had two hits for OV while Taylor and Holman each had one hit and 2 RBI.  Holman picked up the win in the circle, striking out 5.

WMCC is now 7-15 overall and 1-8 in Lakes 8 conference play.

From WMCC Coach Jeff Nestell: “Orchard View is a strong team and one of the toughest opponents on our schedule.  After dropping the first game, I was proud of how our girls came back in the second game and played one of their best games of the season.  While the game result was a loss, there were lots of wins, including some spectacular defensive plays in the infield and outfield, a strong pitching performance from Sophie Hawke, and great at-bats against the two best pitchers we’ve seen all year.  Sometimes games can’t be measured by wins and losses; today was one of those days, and that gives us good momentum as we head into the final games of the regular season.”
